Well-designed and implemented online classes will not restrict or ignore the genius of great teachers, instead cost-effectively sharing those talents with a larger audience. Tools are now available to create online courses, but engaging the left brain and the right brain so the course impacts the largest number of learners takes technical implementation skills.

The online tools can also benefit educators in traditional classroom settings, providing a visual element that can engage more students to participate intellectually and emotionally.

  • 1- Online Training: Safe Environment & Mandated Reporter

    There are 10 states in the US with less land area than the geographical area covered by Riverside and San Bernardino counties. As a result, teaching child safety and mandated reporter was taxing on the trainer teams. Thus, it became a high priority to create a website where trainees could complete both trainings from their own homes.

    In 2006, only primitive, expensive tools existed for hosting online training and assessing trainees. (In 2013, "there's an app for that".) To address that need, web application software was designed and coded in ColdFusion to host the training. Each course contained over 100 webpages of content, with parallel content in English, Spanish and Vietnamese stored in the database. A special challenge was the fact that many Asian languages require unicode format, implemented in distinctive ways throughout the development platform (Dreamweaver), the programming language (ColdFusion), the database (SQL Server), and even the keyboard.

  • 2- Science Fair Judge

    An M.S. in Analytical Chemistry provides a good background for judging science fairs. These events help young people to understand the scientific method and apply their creativity and curiosity to a scientific question.

    Judging included county (Los Angeles, Orange County, and Inland Empire) and local school fairs. With post-graduate education classes came the tools to map the application of scientific method with the cognitive development expected of students at various levels.

    Engaging oneself in the science fairs also entails looking for a variety of ways to use the scientific method and contrast it with applied science. A fantastic candidate was found in the Orange County schools, which offered an invention fair. A proposal was created to consider the concept at the school in Riverside.

  • 3- Promoting Hybrid Education

    Online Education is an excellent tool for ongoing education of adults. However, by itself, it sometimes lacks the human factor, vibrant discussions, and reliable assessments.   • 4- Writing & Editing for Science, Medical, Tech

    Excellent writing and editing skills are critical to developing today's new media, as well as creating materials in more traditional formats.

    Technical writing efforts include research and grant proposals for chemistry and post-harvest avocado studies, as well as documentation for several large-scale software programs. Technical editing has included air pollution research, and most currently, two publications for medical research journals. Other writing contributions range from education and social science to mountaineering safety.

Assigned to teach Microsoft Office in Spanish for ROP, it was taking apart and old computer and passing the inside components around the class that removed the undesired mystery for the adult students. It turned hypothetical into concrete.

  • 7- Techrofitting the Classic Lecture
