STEM is the acronym for Science + Technology + Engineering + Mathematics. These are all "metric" subject areas, which many people consider left-brained. However, STEM depends heavily on the right-brain, as these technical fields are very graphical. In fact, STEM is ambi-cerebral, meaning it stimulates both sides of the brain concurrently.
The same skills applied in STEM careers can be found in music. Improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and counterpoint are examples of musical elements requiring an innate mathematical sense, both in composition and performance. As an ambi-cerebral art, music can be key to promoting STEM to young people.
